Map Descriptions

Annual Growth Policy Areas - This map shows the areas within the County where development limits are imposed based on transportation service. more information

Base map - A countywide, planimetric (i.e., two dimensional) map showing features such as roads, streams, municipalities and existing parks. This map is used as a base for all the other maps accessible through this web site.

Census Places - Census 2000 - U.S. Census 2000 Places, which include census designated places and incorporated places, are display for Montgomery County. Census designated places (CDPs) comprise densely settled concentrations of population that are identifiable by name but are not legally incorporated places; CDPs are statistical counterparts of incorporated places. more information

Census Tracts - Census 2000 - The U.S. Census 2000 Tracts within the County are displayed. Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of the County delineated by local participation in the U.S. Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program. Each area contains approximately 4,000 people of relatively homogeneous characteristics with respect to population, economic status and living conditions. Census tracts provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of decennial census data over the decades and are only occasionally split to reflect population growth. more information

Census Tracts - Census 2000 with Community Analysis Zones - The Census 2000 Tracts are displayed with the County's Community Analysis Zones. This map compares the different geographic delineation used by Park & Planning and the U.S. Census Bureau for reporting demographic and housing information. more information

Community Analysis Zones - Community Analysis Zones (also known as Traffic Analysis Zones) are displayed along with their annotation. Community Analysis Zones are a geographic sub area of the County that are used to measure and display aspects of growth and transportation. Designed to reflect neighborhood/communities.

Community Based Planning Areas - The boundaries of the Community Based Planning Areas within Park & Planning. The Community Based Planning Division is divided by geography into seven teams.

Congressional Districts - The federal government's congressional districts are shown.

Corridor Cities Transitway - This map shows the proposed Transitway, along with stations, from Clarksburg Town Center in the North-northwest of the County to the Shady Grove Metro station. The transit way is planned to ease congestion along the I-270 corridor and provide transportation access to the new Clarksburg town center development. Major road, parkland, and municipalities are included to provide geographic reference. Both maps show the same information, except in landscape and portrait.

Council Districts - 2001 - The County Council is the legislative branch of Montgomery County. There are seven Council members representing five Districts and two at-large.

General Area Locations -This map contains the annotation for the locations/places shown on the base map.

General Plan Refinement - Wedges and Corridors Concept Map -The "corridors" portion of this concept map represents concentrations of development along major transportation spines or "corridors" that radiate out from the District of Columbia. In Montgomery County, these transportation corridors include Interstate 270 and Interstate 95, part of which lies in the eastern portion of the County along US 29.

Green "wedges" are the spaces between the corridors reserved for predominantly low-density and rural development, except for certain "satellite" towns such as Damascus, Olney and Poolesville. In the green wedges, the Planning Board and County Council have successfully preserved a vast and viable agricultural preserve, primarily through effective planning, zoning and the Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) program.

Green Map -This map shows the green infrastructure of Montgomery County. It highlights the County's programs leading to a green future for existing and future residents. The green spaces comes in several varieties, i.e., parkland, agricultural preservation, homeowners associations and other conservation projects.

Historic Districts - In addition to the features shown on the base map, this map displays the historic districts within the County. more information

Landmarks - In addition to the features shown on the base map, this map contains references, such as colleges and universities, golf course, malls, hospitals, libraries, etc.

Legacy Open Space - This map displays the geographic areas of the County's initiative to preserve open space, watershed lands and historic properties. The map includes existing open space and targeted areas for inclusion in the program. more information

Legislative Districts - This map displays the geographic areas for the County's Senators and Delegates to the Maryland General Assembly.

Master Plan - This map displays the master plan areas within Montgomery County. Master plans include a comprehensive view of land-use trends and future development as they relate to community concerns such as housing, transportation, storm water management, historic preservation, and pedestrian and trail systems, and environmental factors like air, water and noise pollution, and the preservation of agricultural lands. m. more information

Municipalities - This map contains the annotation for the municipalities shown on the base map. There are 21 municipalities in Montgomery County.

Park Police Beats - This map displays the Park Police patrol areas.

Parks - Park & Planning maintains a large network of parks throughout the County. This map shows all the existing parkland. Major parks are annotated.

Planning Areas - The geographic sub areas of the County that are used for planning purposes and which are approved by the County Council. These areas are different than Master Plan boundaries.

Planning Areas with Community Analysis Zones - In addition to the information displayed in the Planning Areas map, this map includes Community Analysis Zones.

Policy Areas - Geographic sub areas of the County that are similar in size to planning areas. Policy areas primarily cover the more-developed portions of the County. Policy areas are used for summarizing and reporting demographic and housing data in the County by the Research & Technology Center.

Policy Areas with Community Analysis Zones - In addition to the information displayed in the Planning Areas map, this map includes Community Analysis Zones.

Priority Funding Areas - The geographic sub areas within the County that meet the State's Smart Growth requirements for sewer service, planned density and access to existing infrastructures.

Rustic Roads - This map provides an overview of the roadways that have been classified in the Rustic Roads Functional Master Plan and other area Master Plans as Country Arterial, Country Roads, Rustic Roads or Exceptional Rustic Roads. This map serves as a supplemental guide to, but not a substitute for, the Approved and Adopted Rustic Roads Functional Master Plan or the Master Plan of Highways. This is an unofficial, illustrative map that has not been Approved or Adopted by the County Planning Board or the County Council. more information

Special Protection Areas - This map displays the Special Protection Areas designated by the County Council. These areas are within a watershed where the natural features are of very high quality and where special measures must be applied to protect these natural features. more information

Transportation Impact Tax Areas - Areas designated by the Council County, where a charge is collected to defray a portion of the costs of highway improvements associated with traffic generated by development. more information

Watersheds - A land area that drains water to a common waterway such as a stream, lake, etc.

WHISK Grid - This is Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission's tiling scheme for dividing up Montgomery County. Used by numerous agencies in the County, including Park & Planning, for mapping purposes. Each grid is 4,000 feet north-south and 6,000 feet east-west, covering an area of about one mile.

Zip Codes - 2001 - This map displays U.S. Postal Service Delivery areas for the County.
