Places from the Past
The Tradition of Gardez Bien in Montgomery County, Maryland
2001, 370 pages, softbound
The
Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission
(M-NCPPC) has just published a book that inventories
historic sites and districts in Montgomery County. Places
from the Past: The Tradition of Gardez Bien in Montgomery
County, Maryland is beautifully illustrated
with photographs, architectural drawings and maps. Places
from the Past documents the history of architecture
and community planning in Montgomery County.
Beginning
with a series of essays on building traditions, housing
types and outbuildings, the remainder of the book is a
geographically organized inventory containing descriptions
and photographs of every historic district and site in
the county. Gardez Bien is the county motto adopted in
1976, meaning to guard well or take good care. The
book can be purchased for $35 by mail at the M-NCPPC Information Counter,
2nd floor, 8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring (by sending completed order form* and check made out to M-NCPPC), or by phone at
301-495-4610. The publication will also be available at the Montgomery
County Historical Society, and Politics and Prose.
