Renovation Updates

November 14, 2008:
We're *this* close! We're putting the finishing touches on the ductwork and fabric sides to the facility, then we'll color coat the courts and clean things up. Group lessons will begin in the facility in January, and a 15-week Spring seson for reserved indoor court play will run January 8 through April 23. Want to get a court for the Spring 2009 season? See the information below ("Tennis Lottery for Reserved Court Time, Spring 2009 Season at Wheaton Indoor Tennis"). Spot time will begin in January as well.

September 10, 2008:
The fabric installation on the frame of the Wheaton Indoor Tennis facility is almost complete (it survived Hurricanes Gustav and Hanna!). The duct work for the heating and air conditioning are next on the to-do list. After the fabric skin, HVAC and lighting installations are all complete, the tennis courts need to be surfaced and color-coated, and general clean-up completed. Wheaton Tennis is scheduled to reopen later this year--we hope to hold group lessons beginning in December in the new facility. The work is (finally) progressing steadily; we thank you for your patience.

June 26, 2008: We truly regret the inconvenience caused to the tennis community by the multiple delays to the renovation project at the Wheaton Indoor Tennis facility.
We rarely have had so many bad things happen to a good project.

  • Facts & Background History
The structure at Wheaton Indoor Tennis is not a true pressurized “bubble”—it is a specialized fabric stretched over a steel frame. When installed, it is very sturdy – but the process of actually getting the fabric stretched and installed around the frame has been plagued with problems. First, in order to prepare the site for construction, we had to re-grade the site to improve the drainage and protect the new structure from water runoff. This delayed the start of construction for a few weeks. Gale force winds then damaged the partially installed fabric, blowing it off completely into a crumpled heap and delaying completion. When construction began again later in the year, yet another windstorm tore the fabric from the frame, once again bringing the installation project to an abrupt halt. At this point, it was too late in the year to begin again—this fabric cannot be installed in cold weather. After these “acts of God,” the original contractor went out of business. We are seeking appropriate redress and recovery from them. The project was delayed yet again as we searched for another vendor to install the fabric “skin.”
  • Answers to Questions
The steel frame at Wheaton Indoor Tennis will not be replaced with a pressurized bubble. When complete, it will be as before -- but with a new fabric skin, new lighting, heating, and air conditioning. As on any project, Parks employees have been closely involved with contractors throughout the entire process, and will continue to do so when work resumes at Wheaton. But we could not fully prevent the events that have afflicted this project.  We are as eager as anyone to see the facility reopened – this project has been extremely frustrating for all concerned.  The material and equipment on site appear to be in good order for the resumption of construction in mid-July.
  • Moving Forward
It should take 4-6 weeks for the new contractors hired to install the exterior fabric. Allow another 4 weeks or so for another contractor to finish the installation of the HVAC and lighting systems. This assumes that the original vendor (whose contract had to be extended due to the delays) can accommodate our revised request within their current schedule. After the fabric skin, HVAC and lighting are installed, the tennis courts then need to be surfaced and color-coated, and general clean-up completed. This will take another 3-4 weeks. After all renovations are complete, Parks staff will inform past seasonal court holders how to reserve seasonal court time in the new facility, schedule spot time for the season, determine and schedule tennis classes, and complete general scheduling/administrative duties.  We cannot in good conscience begin this scheduling/programming work until we are absolutely certain the facility is ready.

As work progresses, we will be able to pin down a more exact date; but barring any additional unforeseen circumstances, we anticipate that the new, improved Wheaton Indoor Tennis facility will be open for business on or around the first week of January 2009.

We appreciate your patience as we work our way through this project, apologize again for the inconvenience, and very much look forward to celebrating the reopening with you all.

Tennis Lottery for Reserved Court Time
Spring 2009 Season at Wheaton Indoor Tennis

The Wheaton Indoor Tennis facility is now accepting applications for reserved seasonal court time for the new 15-week Spring 2009 season. The slightly abbreviated season will run Thursday, January 8, 2009 through Thursday, April 23, 2009. New this year: Five courts will be available for seasonal reservations on Saturday evenings, from 6pm-11pm.

Patrons who won and paid for reserved seasonal court time for the 2007/2008 tennis season at Wheaton Indoor Tennis have been given the opportunity to lock in the same time slot they won in last year's lottery for the upcoming season, without having to go through the lottery process. New applicants for seasonal tennis time at Wheaton Indoor Tennis will need to submit a lottery application.

Spring 2009 Season Court Rates

Monday-Friday 15-week cost   Saturday
& Sunday
15-week cost
7 AM - 4 PM $330.00 ($ 22/hour)   7 AM - 9 PM $450.00 ($ 30/hour)
5 PM - 10 PM $450.00 ($ 30/hour)   10 PM - 11 PM $300.00 ( $20/hour)
11 PM-Midnight $240.00 ($ 16/hour)

Take these five steps to submitting your application for seasonal court time (Spring 2009) at Wheaton Indoor Tennis:

  1. Read all the information about the lottery process, how it works, and how to fill out the application.
Wheaton Tennis Spring 2009 Lottery Letter (pdf, 43KB)
Wheaton Tennis Spring 2009 Lottery Application Instructions (pdf, 118KB)
  2. Fill out your application with your top three choices of days of the week, time of day, and court number. Be sure to fill it out completely and legibly. If we can't read it, we won't be able to include your application in the lottery.
Wheaton Tennis Spring 2009 Lottery Application (pdf, 43KB)
  3. Submit your completed lottery application and $150.00 non-refundable* deposit check by 9:00 a.m., Monday, December 1 to the Pauline Betz Addie Tennis Center, 7801 Democracy Boulevard, Bethesda, MD 20817. You may mail your application or drop it off in person. We can't be responsible for late arrivals of mailed applications, so mail it early, or drop it off in person to be sure. Please be sure to read all the instructions carefully--there's very specific information in these documents about what to do if your group want 2 hours of consecutive court time (because each individual can only apply for one hour of court time), how to address your envelope if you mail your application, etc. (*The $150.00 deposit can be refunded to you if you do not receive any one of your three choices for a court time/day. It will not be refunded if you are awarded one of your three court time/day choices but choose not to accept it.)
  4. The lottery process will begin Tuesday, December 2 at 10:00 a.m. We'll allocate all the available court time, and do our very best to give everyone one of their three choices of times/days/courts. If you and/or your group receives a court, you'll receive notification via mail by December 8. If you did not receive a court time in the lottery, your deposit check will be returned to you.
  5. After all the available court time has been allocated for the 15-week Spring season, we'll send you a bill for the balance of your account (less the $150.00 deposit check). The balance must be paid by December 22, 2008, or your court time will be reassigned. You can pay the balance online at ParkPASS.org with a Visa or MasterCard, or in person at Wheaton Indoor Tennis with a Visa or MasterCard, personal check (pre-printed with the court holder's name), or cash.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at the Wheaton Indoor Tennis facility (301-649-4049), or the Pauline Betz Addie Tennis Center at Cabin John Regional Park (301-469-7300).
